Why Pennycress Oil?
Pennycress oil is suitable for renewable fuel production, including biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Grown as a winter annual on otherwise fallow land, pennycress avoids displacement of food and feed crops while providing living soil cover during the winter months. This efficient use of existing farmland contributes to reduced lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions and positions pennycress to support lower carbon intensity (CI) fuel pathways under frameworks such as LCFS, 45Z, and RFS.
Applications and Market
Drop-In Biofuel Feedstock
Pennycress oil has been demonstrated to function as a drop-in feedstock for biofuel production, meeting ASTM biodiesel standards and showing compatibility with existing oil blends and processing infrastructure. This allows biorefineries to evaluate pennycress oil with minimal operational disruption.
Market Potential
-
Pilot oil pricing: ~$1.00/kg (negotiable during early pilot phases)
